Western Erie Canal

Western Erie Map

The Western Erie Canal Region begins at Tonawanda on the Niagara River halfway between Buffalo and Niagara Falls and continues eastward to Central New York's Oneida Lake north of Syracuse and west of Utica. The Black Rock Canal connects the Erie Canal through the Niagara River with Lake Erie and Buffalo NY, the western terminus of the original Erie Canal. This region follows the original excavated Erie Canal route through historic villages and towns of Lockport, Medina, Albion, Brockport, Rochester, Fairport, Palmyra, Newark, Lyons, and many other picturesque villages dotted throughout the rich western New York farmland. Midway, the Genesee River intersects the Canal providing a water route to the city of Rochester, home of Kodak, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas, at the redeveloped waterfront at historic Corn Hill Landing.
