The Eastern Erie Canal Region begins in Central New York, north of Syracuse at Sylvan Beach on the east shore of Oneida Lake and runs to Waterford NY north of Albany, where the Erie Canal meets the Hudson River and connects with the Champlain Canal. Cities include Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Amsterdam, Schenectady and Albany, through the historic Mohawk River Valley to the Hudson. This region abounds with historic sites and museums from the original Erie, America's 19th & 20th industrial heritage, recreation opportunities, attractions, and some of the greatest structural engineering features of the canal. At Waterford both the Champlain Canal and the Erie Canal connect to New York City and the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River.
