The Cayuga-Seneca Canal connects the Erie Canal with the heart of the New York's Finger Lakes Wine Region. Its route cuts through the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge to connect the two largest Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, with the Erie Canal. Ithaca, Geneva and other cities along or near the Cayuga-Seneca Canal have new businesses based on the rich research heritage associated with colleges and universities located there. Seneca Falls, the home of the National Women's Hall of Fame/Women's Rights National Historic Park and Waterloo, the birthplace of Memorial Day are villages with historical significance. Watkins Glen with its outstanding natural Glen, State Park, and raceway make the Cayuga-Seneca Canal a gateway for land and water travelers.
